From Handshakes to Handing Out: The Enduring Power of Business Cards

So I was attending a lot of events in the lead up to Christmas (as I am sure most of you were)

Great to meet, connect and chat with new networks. One thing I really noticed tho – there are those that are ‘For’ and ‘Against’ the humble business card.

So I started thinking; are those little pieces of paper we've been exchanging for decades, really still relevant in this digital age?

I mean, think about it. We've got QR codes now that link directly to our LinkedIn profiles. There are apps that let us share contact info in seconds. It's fast, it's eco-friendly, and it's all up-to-date. So, why would we still carry around those traditional business cards?

One reason against them is that in today's world, our smartphones are practically an extension of ourselves. They're often the first point of contact. With QR codes, all someone has to do is scan it, and they have all your info right there.

Plus, there's the whole environmental angle. Business cards create a paper trail, and many people are going green, favouring digital options to cut down on waste.

And let's not forget the issue of data accuracy. With digital platforms, you can be sure your contact info is always current. Business cards, on the other hand, can quickly become outdated if your phone number or email address changes.

Lastly, there's the problem of cards getting lost or forgotten. How many times have you collected a handful of cards at a networking event, only to realize later that you can't remember who's who?

HOWEVER - here's where it gets interesting. While these digital options are incredibly efficient, tangible connections still have their own kind of magic.

For one, they're memorable. Handing over a well-designed business card or a unique tangible item can create a lasting impression. It's something that your new contact can hold onto, making it easier for them to remember you in the sea of digital profiles.

And speaking of unique items, they can be fantastic conversation starters. Imagine handing out a business card with a creative design or offering a memorable item related to your business. First thing people do is to flip them over to read the back! It can spark conversations and help you stand out in a way that digital profiles just can't replicate.

By Tangible, it might be a business card, it might be a flyer, it could even be a notebook or novelty token like hand sanitiser or a USB. But tomorrow you can guarantee, it will still be sitting on someone’s desk as a reminder to connect on Linkedin or email you.

Lastly, there's something to be said for cultural significance. In some parts of the world, the exchange of business cards is more than just a formality; it's a meaningful ritual. Respecting these traditions can go a long way in building relationships.

So, here's the bottom line: Are business cards dead? Not quite. In the world of business networking, it's all about balance. We can embrace digital tools for efficiency, but let's not underestimate the power of a well-designed business card or a memorable tangible item. These little tokens can be the difference between a fleeting connection and a lasting partnership.

So, the next time you head to a networking event, think about leaving a tangible piece of yourself behind—it might just make all the difference.
